Bet Shemesh is a biblical city, now an archaeological site on a tell. The modern city, founded in 1950 as one of the first "development cities" of the Hebrew state, is rather bleak and dense. These new transit cities were home to the new migrants of the 50s and 60s, often Sephardic communities who were discriminated against by the state and not rehoused. Today, over half the population is ultra-Orthodox, with a sizeable haredim community. Ten km to the east, you can visit the superb Stalactite Cave National Park.
