Bethlehem is no longer the typical biblical village depicted on Christmas cards. The town (30,000 inhabitants), together with the suburbs of Beit Sahour (to the east) and Beit Jala (to the west) and its three refugee camps, forms a conurbation of over 60,000 inhabitants, mostly Christian and Muslim Palestinians. Dominated by minarets and bell towers, Bethlehem shows its religious diversity. The city is predominantly Muslim, but also has a Christian minority (around 11%). Religious affiliation aside, its inhabitants consider themselves first and foremost Palestinians, and share the same Palestinian Arab culture. Its atmosphere of religious tolerance, lively streets, colorful market, terraced olive groves and welcoming people make Bethlehem a town to fall in love with.
