This church, one of two bearing this name in Ein Kerem (the other is in the Russian monastery), stands on the site of the house where, according to tradition, John the Baptist, a major figure in Christianity, was born. The original building was constructed in the 12th century by the Crusaders, then renovated in the 17th century, but the current structure dates from 1939. The church is run by the Catholic Franciscan community, as is the nearby Church of the Visitation.
