In all likelihood, the name Eschbach-au-Val comes from an Alemannic expression meaning "ash-lined stream". The village's origins are linked to a donation made by King Louis the Pious to the Abbey of Munster in 824. Its location away from the Fecht valley enabled it to escape the destruction of the First World War. Opposite the town hall, topped by an elegant bell tower, is an old 19th-century washhouse. From the village, a path leads to the ruins of Schwarzenbourg castle, built in the 13th century and transformed into a romantic ruin by industrialist André Hartmann in the 19th century.
