Capital of La Axarquía, it's worth a visit for its old town. Its foundation dates back to the 10th century, when the town sprang up around the fortress. It was an important medina of the Nazarene kingdom, fortified and defended by solid walls. It was in 1487 that the Catholic Monarchs entered the city, leading to a major architectural renovation that was continued in the 18th century with the redevelopment of public spaces and the construction of civil and religious buildings, which you can discover on a stroll through the old town. It was also the birthplace of the philosopher María Zambrano, one of the great Spanish intellectuals of the 20th century.
