In this very mountainous area, the city crowns a rocky plateau cut off by a precipice: the impressive Tajo Gorge. With a sheer drop of over 100 m, it divides the town in two: the Ciudad, or old town, to the south, and the Mercadillo, or "merchants' town", the modern part, to the north. This theatrical setting, with its legendary bullring and bandoleros(bandits), has contributed to the legend of a romantic city that has fascinated many intellectuals since the 18th century. Today, its viewpoints and breathtaking vistas over the Serranía de Ronda continue to attract a steady stream of tourists.
