Main city of Carnia and gateway to the Carnic Alps, Tolmezzo is nestled in a loop formed by the Tagliamento river and its tributary the But stream. It has a well-preserved historic center that is concentrated around the Borgàt district with the Cathedral of San Martino, beautiful 18th century palaces and numerous porticos. It also houses the Museo Carnico delle Arti e Tradizioni Popolari, rich in ethnographic material about the life of Carnia in the past. There are several walking excursions from Tolmezzo to Monte Strabut, Monte Amariana (1,905 m) and the high plateau of Curiedi.
