One of the oldest seaports in the United States (400 years old) has lost none of its old-world charm. The Georgian and neoclassical houses of the city's former captains are testimony to the wealth of this still active port. Samuel de Champlain first set foot in the town in 1606, nicknaming the site "Le Beau Port". Then, in 1623, the English made the journey from Plymouth and founded the city of Gloucester. In summer, Bostonians love the sandy beaches. From Boston's North Station, Gloucester can be reached in less than an hour by MBTA commuter trains.
