With its 24,000 inhabitants, Lagoa is an important town in the Algarve, perched on a small hill. Two sites are particularly noteworthy: the Nossa senhora da Luz church, rebuilt after the 1755 earthquake, and the Convent of St. Joseph, Lagoa's cultural center, where exhibitions of paintings, photography and sculpture are held. Lagoa can be used mainly as a base from which to explore the region. However, small coastal villages such as Carvoeiro or Benagil are preferable. Incidentally, Lagoa is the only municipality outside the capital to boast three Michelin-starred restaurants.
