At the beginning of the 18th century, Porto Côvo was a small fishing village that lived according to the whims of the weather: when the swell was strong, the boats could neither enter nor leave the port without risk. Towards the end of the century, a rich bourgeois from the capital, Fernandes Bandeira, fell in love with the area and began a renovation of the village; he was named baron of Porto Côvo in 1804. It is a small village entirely paved, with a main commercial street and some houses around. Offshore, a small jewel thrown in the ocean: the Ilha do Pessegueiro. Porto Côvo, famous for its coves, is very popular during the summer vacations.
