In 1835, a wealthy Portuguese merchant, Francisco Alvarez, became the owner of the entire Viña Valley. The place quickly became a weekend resort. The town gradually benefited from a new craze for summer stays in Port of Spain. Another important factor in the character of the city was the settlement of foreigners: English, Germans, French and Italians. Each brought their own customs, which resulted in a great variety of European styles. Today, it is one of the most famous seaside resorts in the country: a pleasant stopover after a stay in the chaotic nearby port.
