With a population of 170,000, Quilpué is the capital of the province of Marga-Marga. Neighbouring Valparaiso and Viña del Mar, it adjoins Villa Alemana, a municipality officially detached from Quilpué in 1933. Close to the countryside and the Pacific Ocean, its territory was already occupied by the Mapuche and Quechua peoples before the arrival of settlers. Quilpué, in Mapudungún, means "place of doves"; but it is internationally known as the Ciudad del Sol, the city of the sun, thanks to the pen of poet Teresa Bórquez Oberreuter: it is characterized by a privileged climate, with 300 days of sunshine a year!
