Villa Alemana is part of the Gran Valparaiso urban area, which also includes Viña del Mar, Quilpué, Concón and Valparaiso. This municipality was born with the development of Chile's railways. It was founded on November 8, 1894 under the name of Vina Miraflores by Don Buenaventura Joglar. Joglar, who owned the largest tract of land, renamed the area Villa Alemana because of the large number of Germans, the area's first inhabitants. Villa Alemana is also nicknamed the Ciudad de la Eterna Juventud (City of Eternal Youth) for its mild climate, which is said to spare residents from the effects of old age!
