There are two ways to get there, either directly via the old Calama road, or via the new one. A panoramic viewpoint set up along the road towards Calama reveals the Cordillera del Sal, in fact the bottom of a lake that has emerged. Salt sediments beaten by the action of rain (very rare...) and above all wind have given it a new artistic touch. The Valley of the Moon, reminiscent of Ben Hur's Valley of the Lepers, is a silent place. In fact, the Valley of the Moon served the same function, providing refuge for the sick who were feared to be contaminating their village. Food was brought to them and slid into baskets using a system of ropes. If you're planning a trip to the Valley of the Moon, make sure these places are on your travel agency's itinerary. The famous Valley of the Moon is a vast expanse of sand, dotted with rock salt and surrounded by ridges, peaks and hills, giving the site a lunar appearance. You can climb the large dune on your right to watch the sun set (in the company of dozens, if not hundreds, of other tourists... yes!). Two kilometers further on, a cave opens up, with some passages open to the sky. The tourist crowds quickly crowd the dune, leaving the cave all to yourself! Less impressive than the rest, but sumptuous all the same. If you're planning to cycle, trek or camp here, make sure you take plenty of water with you.
