With a population of nearly 12,000, Kailua-Kona, often referred to simply as Kona, is the most visited city on the Big Island because of its year-round sunshine, great beaches, hotels and restaurants for all budgets, a variety of sporting activities, and the name of Hawaii's best-known coffee, the famous Kona coffee, comes from this coffee-growing region. Beyond its downtown area, Kailua-Kona extends further south along Keauhou Bay. During the 20th century, the development of tourism in Hawaii led to the construction of many luxury hotels, which unfortunately caused the town to lose its authenticity.
