The post of Opelousas was founded in the 18th century by the French as an outpost for trading with the Indians. The town was named after one of their tribes who lived there, the Appalusas. The great pride of Opelousas is that during the Civil War it was the state capital. It is one of the oldest cities where the first French settlers in Louisiana settled (1720), after Natchitoches (1714) and New Orleans (1718). After the Louisiana Purchase, it was named the seat of the Imperial Parish of St. Landry in 1805. Not to be missed: the farmers' market held every Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday morning and the Old Village.
