Ville Platte was founded in the early 19th century by Marcellin Garand, an adjutant in Napoleon's army. He built a grocery store and a tavern where travelers to Opelousas and Alexandria stopped. He then set up a post office which also served as a business for the few farmers in the area. Ville Platte's population increased in the late 1930s when oil was found north of town. The creation of Chicot State Park, the largest natural park in Louisiana, is now the main attraction. The city itself is not very interesting and lacks charm.
