Pontorson is a family story. In 1030, the father, Robert le Diable, ordered Captain Orson to build a bridge over the Couesnon, the border between Brittany and Normandy. The son, William the Conqueror, wanted a city to be built there. Little remains of this period, with the exception of the church of Notre-Dame de la Paix. Another famous figure was Bertrand du Guesclin, who captained Pontorson and made it the capital of jousting and tournaments. It was during one of these tournaments that Gabriel de Montgomery, another local resident, inadvertently thrust his spear into Henri II's right eye in 1559.
