Sub-prefecture of the Manche, generally considered as the gateway to Normandy for those coming from Brittany, Avranches is proudly set on its granite promontory. A royal town, destroyed during the wars of religion in the Middle Ages, it was strongly contested during the Vendée war, then heavily bombed during the Allied liberation. Recovered from its wounds, Avranches is now a commercial town with a remarkable religious heritage: Saint-Gervais basilica, Saint-Saturnin church or Notre-Dame-des-Champs church, for example. Avranches is also full of pretty little streets and beautiful parks.
