240 km north of Quito. Capital of the province of Carchi, Tulcán, on the Colombian border, is the highest city of the country (2 950 m). Even if the date of its foundation goes back officially to 1535, this city carries a Maya name meaning valiant warrior. Nestled on the border with Colombia, Tulcan, like most border towns, is a busy commercial centre. It does not offer any major tourist interest, except for crossing into Colombia, about 6 km from the city, by taking the Rumichaca international bridge, which marks the Colombian border. The market takes place on Thursdays and Sundays, but there is a lot of counterfeiting.
