The local market of Cotacachi is held on Saturdays, it is the day to equip yourself with leather! The city is indeed the seat of many craftsmen and leather companies which produce as well for the local market as for the export. Another facet, less known by the tourists: Cotacachi is the musical capital of the country. One does not count any more the groups resulting from its school of music. Every year in September, Cotacachi celebrates the Jora festival which evokes the ceremonies of the Sun worshippers at the time of the equinox.Cotacachi is also the name of an extinct volcano, located north of Quito and culminating at 4,944 m. Its last eruption dates from two or three years ago. Its last eruption was two or three thousand years ago. Its most beautiful crater is the Cuicocha, today a lake much visited by tourists.
