This city of 135,000 inhabitants was founded in 1606 by the Spaniards as San Miguel de Ibarra. Many beautiful churches and public buildings were erected, but an earthquake destroyed much of it in 1868. In 1987, the city was hit again by a deadly earthquake that damaged its buildings. For the aesthete, Ibarra preserves however its colonial roots and benefits from a very interesting architectural harmony. Its narrow streets are lined with low houses with white walls and tiled roofs. For the gourmet, the city is the source of many gastronomic specialties, especially famous desserts: las nogadas, nut-based sweets; helados de paila, sorbets made with pure fruit juice, hand-beaten in a large bronze bowl; el arrope de mora, a kind of syrupy blackberry jam and empanadas de morocho. Ibarra is well worth a visit, both for its old-fashioned charm and colonial style and for the warm atmosphere that reigns here.
