Located at an altitude of 2,800 meters, the Laguna de la Cocha - also known as Lago Guamuéz - is the second largest natural body of water in the country (over 40 km²), after the Laguna de Tota (Boyacá). This lake of glacial origin is the first wetland in the Andean zone to be classified as internationally important, according to the Ramsar Convention. Several rivers feed it, such as the Encano River. The waters of the lake descend via the Guamuéz river, which flows into the Putumayo river. The villages around the lake live mainly from fishing and agriculture, and a little from tourism. It is possible to reach the island La Carota, in the center of the lake, a natural reserve with an exceptional fauna and flora. It is a sacred place for some indigenous groups, such as the Camsas and the Ingas. Some trails that hikers will appreciate.
