About fifteen kilometers north of San Francisco El Alto, this town is famous for its tradition of weaving, with its beautiful ponchos and wool blankets in mind. Every Sunday, you can find them on the stalls of the market, which also shelters productions of the surrounding villages. Deeply Mayan, with a population that is 99% K'iche', Momostenango appears in the Popol Vuh as "Cho tz'aq"; "in front of the fortress".Apart from its textiles, it is famous for its "riscos", vertical and steep rock formations such as one rarely sees, which are the result of a long process of erosion.
