The fishing village of old has given way to a seaside town of nearly 5,000 inhabitants, framed by the cliffs and the Transcantábrico viaduct. The site is singularly arranged along the Río Negro and retains much character. Even if the port seems somewhat decrepit, Luarca, known as the white city of the green coast, preserves two typical fishermen's quarters, La Pescadería and El Cambaral. In this upper part of Luarca you can see the Mesa de Mareantes y Navegantes, a mosaic wall depicting the history of the neighbourhood. You can also visit the marine cemetery. Severo Ochoa, winner of the Nobel Prize for Medicine in 1959, is buried here, but the main reason for going there is the beautiful view of the sea. And it is in mid-August that you can enjoy its emblematic festivals: Our Lady of the Rosario and San Timoteo, dedicated to the two patron saints of the city.
