Harlech is a small town of around 1,700 inhabitants clinging to the rocks, as its name suggests ("rough rock"), close to a beautiful 6.7 km beach. The main attraction is the castle, built in the 13th century atop a rocky escarpment once battered by the waves. In the 15th century, during the War of the Two Roses, it was the scene of a memorable siege. The view of the surrounding area is breathtaking. You can also visit Llanfair Slate Caverns, an ancient slate mine dug by hand by candlelight. Harlech is one of the finest golf courses in Wales, set in a superb dune landscape overlooked by the medieval castle.
