Elan Valley is the story of countryside and villages renowned for their beauty and wildness, swallowed up between 1892 and 1903 to create four reservoirs to supply Birmingham - and therefore the English - with drinking water. That said, the reservoirs are worth the detour, offering an idyllic backdrop of stretches of water framed by pine and moss forests. At the bottom of the waters lie farms, pubs and churches, the only hidden remnants of another life. Today, all that remains of this controversial interlude are a few verses by the poet R.S. Thomas, who spent his honeymoon in the region before the flood!
