With 72 000 inhabitants, Shrewsbury is the capital of Shropshire, a region renowned for its pleasant nature, ideal for hiking and gastronomy. The city is identified by the Severn River and probably exists only because this natural defensive bulwark encourages the Romans to settle there. Guillaume the Conqueror himself made good use of this near island location by establishing one of the fortresses destined to place his power over the English, following the victory of Hastings. At the time of Edouard I and his conquests in Wales, the city served as a theatre in the judgment and then in execution of Dafyd, the last prince Welsh.Elegant Tudor houses with breathtaking facades are located in the lively pedestrian centre. Their colombages and balconies are a pleasure for your eyes. Three bridges cross Severn and wherever you are in Shrewsbury, you're never far from its shores. In the west, the pleasant Quarry Park is located in the centre of the Dingle Gardens, which will be appreciated by the gardens. Here you can taste the charms of a typical British city, where the posh hotels and the well-present gastronomy offer an opportunity for a pleasant stay. Very well served by rail, it is an ideal base for who would also like to explore the more rural facet of the Shropshire and linger in its charming countryside villages. The famous celebrities can count on Charles Darwin, the novelist Marie Webb and, of course, Ellis Peters, with his famous hero, Brother Cadfael.
