A small town of around 1,700 inhabitants clinging to the rocks as its name suggests ("rough rock"), close to a beautiful 6.7 km beach. Nevertheless, the main attraction is the castle, built in the 13th century atop a rocky escarpment once battered by the waves. In the 15th century, during the War of the Roses, it was the scene of a memorable siege. The view of the surrounding area is breathtaking. A visit to Llanfair Slate Caverns, an ancient slate mine dug by hand under candlelight. There's always a special atmosphere in these caves, one of whose chambers is as vast as a cathedral.
