The name "Diverse Grotte" (several caves) would be the origin of the current name of this charming village. There are a number of caves in the area, one of which has a 17th-century calvary. The caves are located in an area characterized by deep ravines in the limestone. These karstic crevices are the most spectacular sights of the area. Grottaglie is also famous for its ceramic production, an art that can be discovered in the museum and in the ceramists' quarter along Crispi and Caravaggio streets. You should visit the workshops of the artisans and find a lucky charm in the shape of a stone called pumo, typical of the area.
