After Maruggio, San Giorgio Ionico is another community in the past somewhat turbulent. San Giorgio is the largest village in the group of municipalities inhabited in the fifteenth century by Albanians fleeing Turkish progress in the Balkans. Today, it is an agricultural and developed village, most of which work for Ilva, Europe's largest steel complex (ex Italsider).
