As its name suggests, the town is an ancient Messapian city(Caelium). Described as a "city of art and a land of gastronomy", it has preserved a small, charming centre with an oriental feel, which spreads out around its ducal castle and its Chiesa Matrice. The town has been well restored and invites you to stroll through its narrow streets lined with whitewashed houses and palaces. Ceglie is also a place known for its gastronomy: one of its restaurants was the first in Puglia to obtain a Michelin star in 1996. It is also a beautiful surrounding landscape, studded with trulli and specchie, those piles of stones that look like funerary monuments.
