The ancient capital of the Messapians, which over time became the most important city of the eastern Ionian province, Manduria is above all the home of oil and wine (the famous Primitivo di Manduria). It has some Renaissance and Baroque buildings. The most interesting palace is the Palazzo Imperiali, named after the family who built it in 1717. Built on the remains of an ancient Norman fortress, it has an elaborate portal and a wrought iron balcony running the full width of its façade. Among the religious buildings, the cathedral stands out. Nearby, the small Jewish ghetto hides some structures from the late Middle Ages.
