A small commune isolated from only 5,000 inhabitants and close to the Ionian coast, Maruggio was a day saved from oblivion by arrival in its territory, in the fifteenth century, of the order of the Templiers and then by Malta. Every year, in April, the village is the scene of a mysterious religious festival (and pagan at once), the Procession of Trees, during which the image of San Pietro in Bevagna is walking on the streets. Community members carry large tree traps on their shoulders.
