The gravina of Castellaneta forms one of the largest valleys in Puglia due to erosion. 145 meters deep and 350 meters wide, the abyss seems to have been dug to the center of the earth. The city was founded in the 10th century by refugees fleeing their towns and villages destroyed by the Saracens. Its eventful history has not prevented Castellaneta from being the home of the famous actor Rudolph Valentino, born here in 1895. Two monuments will catch your attention: the baroque cathedral, built in 1300 and rebuilt in the 18th century, and the Cappella del Sacramento where some beautiful paintings by Domenico Carella are kept.
