Laterza reveals a small historical center with white houses cohabiting with the massive Palazzo Marchesale, seat of the tourist office, and the Fontana dei Mascheroni, a sixteenth century fountain decorated with mascarons. The city is clinging to the top of the gravina of Laterza which is the largest crevasse in Puglia. It is in fact 12 km long, not more than 500 m wide and in some places 200 m deep. More wild than the others, it has become a protected area under the name of Oasi Gravina di Laterza. You can enjoy a beautiful view of the canyon from the belvedere near the Chiesa Matrice San Lorenzo.
