This colonial town 45 km from Tunja, on the shores of Lake Sochagota, is known for its cheese (pretty good!) and its sulfurous thermal waters. The main springs are on the road to Pantano de Vergas, where large hotels offer cures and a wide range of treatments and leisure activities. 10 km from Paipa, Pantano de Vargas was the site of a decisive battle for the independence of Colombia. On July 25, 1819, Simón Bolívar's army crushed the royalist troops. There is an imposing bronze monument, the Monument to the Lancers, considered the masterpiece of the modern Colombian sculptor Rodrigo Arenas Betancourt.
