Barichara, "place of rest" in the Guan language, is considered the most beautiful village in Colombia and has been a National Heritage Site since 1975. Not a stone seems to have moved since its foundation in 1705. With the heat, its sloping cobblestone streets and low houses with interior gardens give it an incomparable charm. Today's inhabitants are careful to keep the village in its original and peaceful state. A visit to the stonecutters, a stop at the viewpoint (with a superb view of the Río Suárez canyon) and the cemetery, a tour of the parks and churches are all quickly done. However, the visitor is tempted to stop and rest. And after all, why not? A stopover of one night or more will allow you to really enjoy the sweetness of Barichara. The local gastronomic specialty is the cabro, served with pepitoria, rice mixed with blood and viscera of the animal... Not sure you will like it! Otherwise, you can taste the hormigas culonas ("big ass ants"), an old tradition of the Guane Indians.
