San Gil, the "Pearl of the Fonce" (in reference to the Fonce River), has been proclaimed the tourist capital of Santander and is one of the pioneer towns in adventure tourism. Nestled in the midst of beautiful vegetation and within easy reach of several beautiful colonial villages, San Gil is a popular center for excursions and activities, from rafting to paragliding, caving, mountain biking, or bungee jumping. The road leading to Bucaramanga, 2 hours and a half away, is one of the most beautiful in the country. It runs along the natural landscape of the Chicamocha Canyon, bathed by a river that looks like a silver thread at sunrise. It is best to sit on the right side of the bus to enjoy the magnificent view.
