The name Suesca comes from suehica, which means in Chibcha language "the rock of the birds". This village is indeed located not far from a magnificent sandstone cliff, which makes the joy of the birds, but also of the climbers! Las Rocas de Suesca is a temple of climbing in Colombia. On weekends, the cliffs are invaded, as well as the camping and hostels. For those who don't climb, Suesca offers nice walks, around Las Rocas or on the other side of the village, to climb the Cerro de la Virgen (1 hour 15 minutes from the village square), which offers a nice view of the Sabana de Bogotá. There are also several mountain bike trails and other activities offered by local agencies. The village itself is not very interesting, except for the Nuestra Señora del Rosario church, which dates back to the beginning of the 17th century and preserves part of its colonial architecture, a beautiful baroque altarpiece, as well as murals that were used for the indoctrination of the indigenous communities of the region.
