Sugamuxi, renamed Sogamoso by the conquistadors, was an important center of religious ceremonies during the Muisca rule. The archaeological museum Eliécer Silva Celis is the main interest of the city and is worth a guided visit for its vast collection of pre-Columbian objects, including pottery and goldsmith's work. Sogamoso is located about 1 hour from Paipa and 3-4 hours by road from Bogotá ($30,000, frequent departures). Rather than staying in unattractive hotels in town, spend a few days at Finca San Pedro, a friendly hostel where you will be given plenty of information about exploring the area.
