Zipaquirá is a small town, half colonial, half republican, 45 km north of Bogotá and 2,628 m above sea level. It is accessible by car, bus and even by train from the capital. Famous for its salt cathedral, it is one of the oldest cities in the country (1600). The center and its pedestrian paved streets invite you to stroll. On the central square, the cathedral of the Santissima Trinidad is worth a visit. A hundred meters away, the college of Zipaquirá where Gabriel García Márquez studied. It is also a center of quality handicraft production; make a small jump on the side of the plaza de Mercado: fabrics, ceramics, bronze, salt sculptures... On July 28, 2019, the city was filled with great emotion: the young prodigy Egan Bernal, born in Zipaquira 22 years earlier, became the first Colombian (and even Latin American), to win the Tour de France!
