Guatavita is a small town located 72 km north of the capital, which should not be confused with the famous lagoon of the same name, located nearby. It was built in the 1970s to replace the village submerged in the waters of Lago Tomine, an artificial lake created to generate electricity for the surrounding towns. It is a charming tourist place, with its whitewashed houses and flowers that add some colorful notes. You can also go for a walk along the lake, on small paths. Guatavita also has the Museo Indígena Guatavita, a small museum with an interesting guided tour given in Spanish by young indigenous people about the history of the village and the Muisca civilization The visit to Guatavita is not a must, but it is possible to take a break for an hour or two, before or after visiting the Laguna de Guatavita, to eat (trout is on every menu) and buy some handicrafts
