The highest waterfall in Colombia (590 m) is located only 30 km from Bogotá, shortly before Choachí. The Chorrera is a waterfall with a more or less important flow according to the season (little water in January-February), whose name comes from the innumerable chorros (nets of water) that meet in the páramo to form a stream that flows into the void. This steep cliff is an impressive sight, where dense cloud forest vegetation clings and from which the six waterfalls that make up the waterfall tumble down. The path to reach the bottom of the waterfall follows an old royal road(Camino Real La Chorrera) dating from 1803, which connected Villavicencio to Bogotá. It is of medium difficulty, it goes up and down, through fields and humid forest. We are at an altitude of 2,500 meters and it takes about 3-4 hours of walking for the loop. In the same area, before the famous waterfall of La Chorrera, there is another beautiful waterfall: El Chiflón (55 m). It can be admired from the campestre restaurant and those who are not afraid of fresh water can rappel down. The trail is punctuated by five stations with young guides who give explanations in Spanish about the history and environment of the site. The Parque Aventura La Chorrera may seem a bit too organized, but it is a great example of successful community tourism. In fact, it is the farmers of the veredas El Curí and La Palma who are at the initiative of this park. A park which preserves the natural site, but also brings a complement of income to about fifteen peasant families who work in turn on the paths.
