Its ancient fortress and location on Lake Saimaa make Lappeenranta the capital of South Karelia. Today's spa, established in 1870 in the cove of Kaupunginlahti, continues the traditions of this old spa town. The casino terrace, for example, remains a popular spot. The Linnoitus cavalry fortress forms the most interesting old part of the town. Begun by the Swedes, the ramparts were completed by the Russians in the 18th century. The fortress itself houses Finland's oldest Orthodox church (1785), dedicated to the Virgin Mary.Lappeenranta boasts three interesting museums: first and foremost, one devoted to the history of South Karelia through a variety of traditional artifacts, followed by the Fine Arts Museum devoted to modern and regional creations from the south-east of the country, and finally the Cavalry Museum within the fortress.
