The town has a population of around 27,000 (2020). It has lost its former lustre, but is worth a visit for its waterfalls, once the largest in Europe, now dammed. Despite its coniferous forests, the region has one of the highest concentrations of industry in Finland. Ideal for viewing from the charming Crown Park, with its panoramic view of the rapids. The Church of the Three Crosses, completed in 1957, is a true Alvar Aalto masterpiece (no two windows are alike). The Russian border is only ten kilometers away.
