One of the country's most easterly towns, with around 20,000 inhabitants (2020). Hamina is famous for having hosted the 1809 peace treaty between Sweden and Russia, which led to Finland's integration into the Russian Empire. The town, built by order of Per Brahe in 1653, was intended to protect the border region of the Swedish kingdom. Its star-shaped layout, an architectural curiosity, marked a return to Vauban's concepts of fortifications. The urban layout around the town hall and the colors of the wooden houses give the town its charm.
