Kotka, 135 km east of Helsinki and 65 km from the Russian border, is a major Finnish port located along the King's Highway. It currently has a population of 51,869 (2020). The heart of this green city is built on an island. Beautiful parks, such as the Sappoka Gardens, give the town a sense of air. Kotka's history is also of interest.Under Russian rule, the town was one of the tsars' favorite haunts in the Grand Duchy of Finland. Numerous buildings bear witness to this period, including the St. Nicholas Orthodox Church and the Langinkoski Imperial Fishing Lodge.
