From Tallinn to Lahemaa National Park (about 40 km), you'll pass Rebala and its archaeological sites, the Jägala River Falls (called the Niagara of Estonia), the Kuusalu Church, the first to be built by Christian crusaders in 1220 in honour of Saint Lawrence, patron saint of fire (immolated by the Romans in 258). On the road to the industrial cities of eastern Estonia, the park was created in 1971 to protect the environment. Its name, Lahemaa, means land of the gulfs. Covering 65,000 ha, 75% of which is forest, Lahemaa Park is distinguished by the diversity of its landscapes, fauna and flora.
