Until independence, this Soviet naval base 50 km west of Tallinn was not easy to reach, due to secrecy. But nowadays, and this is quite unusual in Estonia, the rail service offers eight Tallinn-Paldiski connections a day, with the last train leaving at around 9.30pm. You can also get there by car - if you've rented one - and opt for a half-day guided tour once you're there. In any case, Estonians are more than happy to see the popularity of this former Soviet port, but are still looking to give it a new label.
